[2006/09/23] Deepa Mehta감독의 Water (존 아브라함 출연), 캐나다 대표로 오스카행

영화 Water (2005년작)   언제나 "인도 영화인가, 아닌가"를 고민하게 만든 감독, Deepa Mehta(디파 메흐타)감독의 Water가 아이러니하게도 캐나다 대표로 아카데미 외국어 영화상 부문에 나갈 것 같군요. 프로듀서가 캐나다인이어서 그렇다는데, 사실, 나오는 주요 인물이 인도인이 아니긴 하지요. 감독도 NRI(외국에서 사는 교포 인도인)이니까...   어쨌든, 이 영화는 인도의 홀어미 풍습의 폐해를 간디 선생의 시대에서 아주 잔잔하게, 아니 아주 치열하게 바라보는 사회 고발성 영화입니다. 부산 국제 영화제에도 소개되었던 영화지요. 인도에서 촬영하다가 쫓겨나서 7년만인가 간신히 완성했지요. 스리랑카에서 촬영을 할 수 밖에 없었다네요.   출연진 중에 Seema Biswas 님은 영화 밴디트 퀸 주연을 했던 여자 배우입니다. 인도 영화에도 굵직한 역으로 많이 출연을 하시죠. Deepa Mehta' Water is headed to the Oscars but no it is not India?s entry but rather Canada?s official entry to the Oscars. Since the producer of the film is Canadian, it became Canada?s entry. Director Deepa Mehta was elated with the development and so was actor Seema Biswas who was also part of the film?s cast. I am very happy though I would have wanted it to be India?s entry definitely. The setting was in India as was the whole star-cast but since it was produced by a Canadian, so it belongs to Canada.
