We love it. We hate it. But we can't ignore it. It's this phenomenon called Bollywood and as much as we try and deny, it is very much a part of our lives. Song and dance sequences, running around trees and melodrama are things that are peculiar to our Hindi films. So while on the topic of things characteristic to Bollywood, how can we forget what it's famous or rather infamous for. Remakes! Over the years, producers and directors galore have developed quite a notorious reputation for getting inspired or making blatant remakes of past hit films. So how could this year be any different?
Its time to rewind to all the movies that were made this year and see who made it to the list this time! One of the first movies to make it to this list would probably be the Mahesh Manjrekar dud Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav, a remake of the Hollywood film A Fish Called Wanda. However, like we all know, it sank without a trace. Maybe the makers should have tried something original instead!
February brought with it the spring season and the Suneel Darshan directed Bewafaa. Having an impressive star cast like Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Sushmita Sen and Kareena Kapoor, it dealt with infidelity, a subject done to death in filmdom. This one had traces of the 1967 Hindi classic Humraaz.
The summer of 2005 was definitely scorching with the deadly combination of Rekha and Mallika Sherawat in Bachke Rehna Re Baba. From the promos itself it could be figured out that this one was a revision of the Sigourney Weaver - Jennifer Hewitt starrer Heartbreakers. One of the biggest musical hits of the year Zeher was remake of Out Of Time. This one surprised everyone as it did well without the backing of a massive starcast. Ajay Devgan couldn't re-create the same brilliance of Sean Penn while playing a mentally challenged character in Main Aisa Hi Hoon that was a desi adaptation of I Am Sam.
The monsoons brought with them a fresh abundance of movies. Hit or flop, but a Shah Rukh Khan movie is certainly a big event in apna Bollywood. The first movie of the year with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead was his home production Paheli. This one was an alteration of the yesteryear film Duvidha, which in turn was an adaptation of the novel of the same name. Few people might be aware that one of the year's most critically acclaimed films Black missed an entry to the Oscars because it was heavily inspired by the Hollywood film The Miracle Worker.
Director Ram Gopal Varma had no qualms accepting that his film Sarkar was heavily inspired by The Godfather and gave it due credits in the titles as well. In fact from the very start he had conceived and promoted this Amitabh-Abhishek combo flick as his tribute to Godfather which worked for him positively. Another film from the RGV camp James was loosely derived from Varma's first Hindi film Shiva. However Varma was not much happy with this film directed by his prot??Rohit Jugraj and is now making his own version of James with the same starcast. Interestingly he has titled the film Shiva. First Shiva remade as James, now James being remade as Shiva. Life has come a full circle for Ram Gopal Varma.
On the other hand, one of the biggest commercial successes of the year No Entry was quite similar to Masti which in turn was similar to The Seven Year Itch. There were also some hatke films like Chocolate. Unfortunately this remake of The Usual Suspects was a complete no-show at the box office. Yash Raj Films' Salaam Namaste was reminiscent of Nine Months in the climax scene along with some sequences blatantly lifted from the popular sitcom Friends.
Diwali is always the time for the biggies to hit theatres. This festive season, the three major movies were Garam Masala, Kyon Ki and Shaadi No. 1. Interestingly enough, all three were remakes or shall we say inspirations. Garam Masala was a remake of Priyadarshan's own Malayalam film Boeing Boeing which in turn was a remake of a Hollywood film of the same name. Kyon Ki too was a version of his own 1986 Malayalam film Thalavattam. And predictably so, Thalavattam was a remake of the Hollywood classic One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. On the other hand Shaadi No.1 suspiciously looked a lot like a mixture of No Entry and Masti. Mahesh Manjrekar's Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi had elements derived from many films like Mr India, Brahmachari, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke to The Ghost.
The festive season of Diwali was barely over and everyone was already looking forward to the year end revelry. When it's an Amitabh Bachchan starrer, it is always big. December's biggest release Ek Ajnabee was a reworked copy of the Denzil Washington starrer Man On Fire. In spite of being a remake, it had a good opening. More so, because of the fact that Amitabh Bachchan was ill at the time of its release and his fans wanted to see more of him.
The coming weeks too will bring their fair share of new interpretations of old movies. Some of the most talked about ones are Holiday inspired by Dirty Dancing and Mr. Black Mr. White having characters vaguely similar to Charlie's Angels. The makers of Fight Club went a step further, didn't even bothering to change the name of their remake of the Hollywood action flick. In conclusion, as long as Bollywood exists, so will remakes. But as long as we're entertained, we're not complaining!
